Dinner With the Devil
I had dinner with the Devil
In a coffee shop on Main
I didn’t swallow much more
Than the words she had to say
They tasted of sand and sugar
Sweet upon the tongue
But something in their texture proved them wrong
So I chewed them up and I spit them out
And I stared that Fallen Angel down
Until the fires flickered from her eyes
Then I said look here Beelzebud
I may have missed the Ark and Flood
But I’m no fool to drown myself in lies
No I didn’t come to kneel or pander
Sell my soul for dreams of grandeur
I only came to say this last goodbye
Farewell ye old Devil
Goodbye lover, so long friend
I’ve carried you for far too long
To be dragged down once again
I’ve found the strength to cast you off
To stand up straight at last
So farewell friend and lover
Ye old Devil on my back
She tried to reel me back
As the Devil’s aught to do
With sultry tones
And fool’s gold smiles
And a memory or two
But I shut my ears and I shut my eyes
To the shadows but not the light
And I let her rant and rave and shout
Curse and coo and tire out
And then I opened up my mouth and said
Farewell ye old Devil
Goodbye lover, so long friend
I’ve carried you for far too long
To be dragged down once again
I’ve found the strength to cast you off
To stand up straight at last
So farewell friend and lover
Ye old Devil on my back
She smiled at me with pity
Certain I could not resist
As she leaned over the table
Lips puckered for a kiss
But the door bell chimed
And I leaned back
Arms folded at my chest
I smiled to see her falter
To see me unimpressed
Her gaze shot to the open door
And in her eyes a fire roared
Now certain she’d been played an utter fool
As an angel walked up to my back
And featherlight that’s where she sat
Hands on my shoulders giving me the strength to play it cool
As I faced once more my that evil one
Then thrice I spoke and done
Farewell ye old Devil
Goodbye lover, so long friend
I’ve carried you for far too long
To be dragged down once again
I’ve found the strength to cast you off
To stand up straight at last
So farewell friend and lover
Ye old Devil on my back

This sounds like song lyrics at times. I'm liking this poem so far out of the entries. Good luck with the contest!
